A STUDY ON THE REASONS THAT LED COUBERTIN TO REVEAL OLYMPIC PHILOSOPHY

Yıl 2020, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 2, 89 - 97, 30.08.2020

Athletics, which was among the religious ceremonies and activities held in ancient Greece to commemorate Zeus, the god of gods, was accepted as the initiator of the Ancient Olympics, but the aim was to ensure peace between the Greek site states, which are constantly at war, albeit for a short time. These activities moved away from their original context and purpose with the occupation of Rome and were eventually closed by the Emperor on the grounds that they were idolatrous and atheism. From that time until Coubertin, there has not been an event large enough to unite the whole world, except for small-scale events. So what were the reasons that led French Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of Modern Olympics and Olympism, to this idea centuries later? In this study, in the light of the information obtained from the literature, the ancient Olympics, the past and present of the concept of Olympism, the establishment of the Modern Olympics, and the reasons that led Coubertin to the idea of Olympism were examined in terms of Olympism values and the link between them was tried to be presented.
