BEYOND AWARENESS: SUSTAINABILITY CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE ATTITUDE-BEHAVIOR GAP AMONG SPORTS SCIENCE STUDENTS
Abstract
Sustainability consciousness has gained importance in higher education as institutions seek to understand how students translate sustainability knowledge into attitudes and behaviors. University students in sports sciences are expected to contribute to sustainable development through their future professional and social roles as educators, coaches, managers, and recreation specialists. Therefore, examining their sustainability consciousness is essential for understanding how sustainability principles can be strengthened within higher education contexts. This study aimed to examine sustainability consciousness levels among sports science students and to investigate differences across demographic and socio-economic variables. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed. The sample consisted of 598 undergraduate students from sports sciences faculties across eight universities in Türkiye. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and the Sustainability Consciousness Questionnaire (SCQ). Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. Findings indicated high levels of sustainability knowledge and positive attitudes, whereas behavioral scores were lower, indicating an attitude-behavior gap. Significant differences emerged according to department, residence type, and weekly working hours. No significant differences were found for gender, age, or income level. Students in Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Sports Management, and Recreation departments reported higher sustainability consciousness than those in Coaching Education. Furthermore, students living in dormitories and those working longer weekly hours exhibited higher sustainability consciousness. Although sports science students demonstrate strong sustainability-related knowledge and favorable attitudes, these do not fully translate into sustainable behaviors. Integrating applied sustainability practices into curricula and campus life may strengthen behavioral outcomes and foster long-term sustainability awareness.
