THE METAVERSE CONCEPT IN SPORT SCİENCES: BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS
Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the scientific reflections of the concept of the metaverse in the field of sports science using bibliometric analysis methods. Data obtained from the Web of Science database using the keywords “metaverse,” “sports,” or “exercise” were analyzed with the VOSviewer 1.6.20 software. A total of 322 studies were identified; however, only 2 publications were found when limited to the sports science category. The analysis includes explanations by year, document type, and category, as well as information on authors, co-authorship, citations, countries, and keyword connections. The findings revealed a low-density, multi-centered collaboration network in the literature. Japan emerged as the most productive country, while keywords such as “metaverse,” “virtual reality,” “deep learning,” and “mental health” were among the most prominent. The presence of only 2 studies in the sports science category highlights that the concept of the metaverse remains a highly limited and still-developing research area within the sports science literature. It was concluded that the integration of the metaverse concept with sports science is still in its early stages and requires interdisciplinary approaches and stronger collaborations. In this context, future studies are expected to strengthen the theoretical framework in this field and address the gaps in the literature.
