COMPARISON OF WEIGHT LOSS BEHAVIOURS IN WRESTLERS OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES

Abstract

The present study aims to compare some behaviours in weight loss in different categories of wrestlers. A total of 689 male mat wrestlers from U15, U17, U20 and senior categories participated in the study. Sample was determined randomly among wrestlers of U15, U17, U20 and senior categories from various cities in Türkiye. Weight loss behaviours of the participants were determined with an information form prepared by the researchers. The information form was sent to coaches and they were asked to share the form with the wrestlers of different categories. The wrestlers who agreed to participate in the study voluntarily were included in the study. Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to determine differences between wrestling categories. One-way analysis of variance and LSD test were used to compare the age at which weight loss started with respect to categories. No significant difference was found in the age participants started wrestling, the methods used to lose weight, and sources from which they received information or were influenced by while losing weight in terms of categories (p>0.05). The difference between the age wrestlers started to lose weight was statistically significant in terms of categories (p<0.05 and p<0.001). A statistically significant difference was found between the amount of weight loss and the days when the wrestlers started to lose weight before competitions in terms of categories (p<0.001). In the U15 and U17 category, significant differences were found for each category in the difference of the amount of average weight loss of light, medium and heavy weight wrestlers (p<0.05 and p<0.001). No statistically significant difference was found in the difference of the average weight loss with respect to light, middle and heavy weight classifications in U20 and Senior category (p>0.05). It is recommended that wrestlers should not start weight loss at an early age and that the negative consequences of weight loss should be explained to wrestlers as well as their coaches. Awareness should be raised among wrestlers about the potential dangers of weight cycle.
