AN EXAMINATION OF RESEARCH ON 21ST CENTURY SKILLS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT

Abstract

This study aims to examine research in the field of physical education and sports related to 21st-century skills and to assess the overall state of the field. To achieve this, the studies were analyzed based on various variables, including the type of study, publication year, the university where the thesis was completed, the journal in which the article was published, the sample group, the research topic, research method, research design, data collection tools, data analysis methods, and the key terms used in the studies. In this study, the document analysis technique, a qualitative data collection method, was used. In this context, a total of 18 studies were identified, including 4 doctoral theses, 9 master's theses, and 5 articles. The studies were examined based on variables such as the type of study, year of publication, university where the theses were conducted, journal in which the articles were published, research topics, key terms, sample groups, research methods, research designs, data collection tools, and data analysis methods. Content analysis was employed in the research. The results of the study indicate that research on 21st-century skills in the field of physical education and sports has been predominantly conducted in 2022. Graduate theses were carried out at a total of 9 universities, and all articles were published in separate journals. The studies primarily focused on topics such as 21st-century skills, skills for teaching 21st-century competencies, 21st-century self-efficacy, technological skills, and digital literacy. It was found that the sample groups most frequently consisted of prospective teachers. In terms of research methods, quantitative methods were primarily used, with survey and document analysis research designs, and data collection tools including scales, document analysis, and interviews. Correlation analysis, ANOVA, and t-tests were the most commonly employed data analysis. In future research, studies conducted in international literature can be examined. In addition, studies conducted in national and international literature can be compared.
