THE IMPACT OF EXERCISE INDUCED MUSCLE DAMAGE ON BALANCE PERFORMANCE IN YOUNG MALES

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD) on balance performance in healthy young males. Eleven healthy young males performed both experimental (muscle damaging exercise) and control trials to randomized cross-over design. Hundred drop jumps (five sets of twenty reps) were performed as EIMD protocol. Serum activity level of creatine kinase (CK), mid-thigh circumference, muscle soreness, dominant single leg and squat position balance performances were measured at pre-exercise (baseline), immediately after, 24th, 48th, 72nd and 96th hours following EIMD. According to the statistical analysis, CK was significantly (p<0.05) increased at 24th and 48th hours following EIMD compared to baseline. Moreover, statistically significant increase was found in muscle soreness levels (p<0.05) and mid-thigh circumference measurements (p<0.05) following EIMD compared to control trials. Furthermore, statistically significant rise was detected in squat position balance overall index scores on stable platform (p<0.05) at 24th hours after EIMD compared to control trials. On the other hand, no significant variation was assessed both for squat position balance on unstable platform (p>0.05) and single leg balance index scores (p>0.05). Conclusively, squat position balance performance on stable platform was seen partially affected by EIMD. However, single leg balance was not impaired by EIMD.
