Stigma: A Review of Weight Stigma

Year 2021, Volume: 1 Issue: 2, 29 - 45, 31.12.2021

Abstract

Due to the fact that human is a social being, she/he may be exposed to some positive or negative attitudes and behaviors in social environments or social relations. It can be said that stigma is one of these negative attitudes and behaviors. In addition, the concept of stigma can be associated with many concepts. Especially in recent years, the fact that individuals are gaining weight gradually and with the increase in obesity can cause many kinds of stigma among people. Individuals can be stigmatized in individual or group relationships in many areas such as weight stigma, obesity and stigma, self-stigma, and weight bias internalization. Our aim with this review is to try to define the concept of stigma, which has not been discussed much in the Turkish literature, and to try to explain stigma with some related concepts. While preparing our study, researches in major databases such as PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Science Direct and Web of Science, which are frequently used as primary literature sources, were examined and included in the review.

Damgalama: Kilo Damgalaması Hakkında Bir Derleme Çalışması

Year 2021, Volume: 1 Issue: 2, 29 - 45, 31.12.2021
