INVESTIGATION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INVOLVEMENT MOTIVATION AND HAPPINESS LEVEL OF 12 TO 18-YEAR-OLD STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the motivation to participate in physical activity and happiness levels of students between the ages of 12 and 18. The study was conducted using a relational research design, one of the quantitative research approaches, and was based on volunteerism. The research data was obtained from a total of 498 students between the ages of 12 and 18 living in Ankara, Kocaeli and Gaziantep. Personal information form, motivation to participate in physical activity scale and happiness scale were used as data collection tools. Convenience sampling method was used for sample selection and face-to-face interview method was preferred for data collection. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS program. In addition, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentage, frequency, T-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation and regression tests were used in the analysis of the data, and Cronbach alpha total internal consistency reliability coefficients of the scales used were calculated. The study found a significant relationship between motivation to participate in physical activity and happiness. In addition, as a result of the analyses, it was observed that students' motivation to participate in physical activity positively affected their happiness levels; this relationship was statistically significant (p<0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that students' increased motivation for physical activity positively increases their happiness levels.
